Every year, artists gather en masse along Santa Fe’s gorgeous and historic Canyon Road for a wonderful afternoon of art demonstrations. The ninth annual Spring Arts Festival will showcase dozens of artists working in a plethora of mediums including oil painting, acrylics, pastel drawings, watercolor, ceramics, bronze and metal sculpture, woodworking, photography, collages and more, giving visitors and collectors the chance to observe them working in real time. Wilder Nightingale Fine Art in Taos, New Mexico, hosts this year’s edition of the American Impressionist Society’s annual Impressions Small Works Showcase. Now in its fifth year, the National Oil & Acrylic Painters’ Society (NOAPS) will be featuring some of the finest smallscale representational paintings from across the United States and Canada during the Best of America Small Works National Juried Exhibition. Events include a luncheon, plein air competition and painting demonstrations, with the exhibition hosted at the Beverly McNeil Gallery in Birmingham, Alabama. “We had over 1,100 entries for the show this year and chose 175 stunning oil and acrylic paintings,” says Patricia Tribastone, president of NOAPS. “We use five featured artists in a blind jury to score the paintings that will be in the exhibition. Painter Cathy Carey has found inspiration in New Mexico, particularly areas around Santa Fe and Taos, areas rich in art history. “My experience of the New Mexican spirit is a rejuvenation of my senses,” she says. “Near Santa Fe, I envision the softly rolling hills of brush, rising into the mesas, tinted terra cotta and tangerine. Winding around the Rio Grande I hear the river sing past the farms and orchards. I catch the scent of pinon smoke and sage, or roasting chilies and I am guided to one of many favorite restaurants for one of so many magnificent meals.
