Just six months after its 2021 event was held at the end of July, LA Art Show returns to the Los Angeles Convention Center for its 2022 edition from January 19 through 23. The fair, considered one of the most comprehensive international art fairs, will help kick off the Los Angeles art season as it returns to its traditional event dates. Opening the fair is the premiere party on January 19 from 7 to 11 p.m. where VIPs can browse and purchase artwork before the show opens to the public. They will be treated to libations and food, while the event will not only celebrate the art on view but also its beneficiary, St. Jude Children’s Hospital, which will receive 15 percent of all ticket proceeds. Jason John is interested in how we attempt to capture human identity. “If you try to tell a story of who you are, [each time you tell it], it’s never the same. We tend to elaborate, forget, fill in the blanks,” he says. “How do we ever meet one’s true identity?” The artist—who has always been drawn to portraiture and the way it confronts the idea of portrayal—represents the figure “ensnared in environments of uneasiness and flux.” The individuals in his paintings gaze at the viewer, and yet are partially concealed by veiling and distortion. Figurative and portrait painter Alyssa Monks had been working on her earth and nature series for the past five years, but when the pandemic hit, she felt that it “didn’t seem to ring true anymore.” Like many others, she was isolated, without nature, and frankly, “‘nature’ felt a little unsafe for awhile,” she says. Adding to this were personal heartaches, a growing political divide and a social justice revolution. Monks felt the need to reimagine her subject matter, themes and even her process. Working only from life, still life painter Claudia Seymour has found her perfect niche. “My focus is the light-filled interaction between objects, their colors, highlights and shadows, and the ambiance created by their surroundings,” she says. The inner journey has always been a defining aspect of Jesse Lane’s highly detailed colored pencil drawings. He depicts humans at their most vulnerable and intimate moments, with the figure contemplating, finding and searching. In the past, Lane’s focused on themes of struggle, but his latest works are about recovery, self-discovery and stepping into the unknown. Award-winning impressionist oil painter Ashlee Trcka has had her work exhibited in numerous exhibitions across the world and is represented by galleries throughout the United States as well as in Canada. “Street baroque explores innocence and influence, unveiling the depths of my personality and interests,” says mixed media artist Isaac Pelayo. Growing up, he was most inspired by the Renaissance and Baroque periods as well as the street art movement, studying the first and observing the second. Multiple Acquisitions In November, Vanessa Rothe Fine Art in Laguna Beach, California, hosted its Americans in Paris exhibition with the theme of Art Nouveau. Black American Portraits Black American Portraits, presented by the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, features approximately 150 works of Black American subjects, sitters and spaces over the course of the 19th century to present day. Drawing primarily from LACMA’s permanent collection, the exhibition seeks to tell the stories of Black Americans and how they’ve used portraiture to “envision themselves in their own eyes. In his book, Amores, written in 16 BCE, the Roman poet Ovid wrote, “Perfer et obdura, dolor hic tibi proderit olim.
