This past March, Australian artist Paul Newton saw the unveiling of his most recent portrait commissioned to hang in the Parliament House in Canberra. The portrait is of former Australian Senate President the Hon. Stephen Parry, who was elected as a Senator for Tasmania in 2004 and reelected in 2010 and 2016. From 2014 to 2017, Parry served as Senate President across two Parliaments. Newton was commissioned by the Department of Parliamentary Services for the Historic Memorials Collection, Australia’s longest-running art commission program, which was founded in 1911. “Senior figures in the Australian Federal Government, such as the Prime Minister, the Speaker of the House of Representatives and the President of the Senate have an official portrait painting commissioned by the Commonwealth. The poet W.H. Auden (1907-1973) wrote, “An honest self-portrait is extremely rare because a man who has reached the degree of self-consciousness presupposed by the desire to paint his own portrait has almost always also developed an ego-consciousness which paints himself painting himself, and introduces artificial highlights and dramatic shadows.” When I think of Philip Harris’ portraits, and his figure paintings in general, I think “uncompromising”—but I don’t really know what that means. So, I’ve settled on “honest” or, maybe, “authentic.” He has said, “I paint primarily by instinct and trust that above intellect. My intention is to make emotionally charged, expressive and authentic paintings which are as uncomfortable and challenging as life is.” I met him at his home in The New Forest in the South of England. It’s tempting to call paintings by Ron Hicks “enigmatic.” The word comes from the Greek ainissesthai, which means “to speak in riddles.” That doesn’t work. Nor does “mysterious.” Hicks gives enough information in his portraits to engage the viewer. Rather than revealing more, he allows the viewer to read into the faces while, at the same time, marveling at the way he has constructed them. They emerge from abstract fields of muted color with the occasional pop of high chroma. His figures are one with the abstraction; multidimensional and complex, they are oases of calm in a chaotic world. Greg Gandy received his master’s degree at Academy of Art University in San Francisco in 2007, the same year he had his first exhibition at the city’s STUDIO Gallery. His most recent paintings will be shown at the gallery from August 26 through September 13. As an undergraduate, Gandy had an assignment to “copy a painting from any artist of our choice. Back then I didn’t know too much about art, so I went to the library and began pulling art books from the shelves. I pulled a book about Alice Neel’s work and for some reason it resonated with me. Grenning Gallery, showcases artwork by a variety of contemporary visual artists. A new group exhibition at its Sag Harbor, New York, location from August 7 to 22 will feature the works of five artists: Stephen Hannock, Steven J. Levin, Sarah Lamb, Angel Ramiro Sanchez and Melissa Franklin Sanchez. Levin is an atelier trained artist in the classical realist tradition. He describes his work as primarily grounded in realism, but with “a touch of the surreal” at times. The year 2020 pushed oil painter Janet Grissom in a direction she has never traveled, each day a new challenge the artist tried to turn into an adventure. She started walking daily, and “during my walks, my mind was freed by searching for phenomenal colors and forms found in the common environments that would become my repeated paths for the next year.” Each time she returned to her studio library, she found books with interesting information relating to what she observed on the walk. “My thought process was changing,” says Grissom. “In several paintings the trees, rocks and water took on new varying colors and forms. Tucked away in a house in old Wiltshire, England, is New Zealand-born artist Tanya Achilleos Lock. She started her oil painting journey in 2011, while studying under Raymond Harris Ching. Since then, she has honed her craft in realism, focusing primarily on wildlife. And in the first year of her art career, she went on to win a number of awards, including first place in the BBC Wildlife Artist of the Year in the Frozen Planet category, and has had her art shown in a number of international exhibitions. Over Labor Day weekend, the Long’s Park Amphitheater Foundation will host the 43rd annual Long’s Park Art Festival, which is back after canceling the show last year due to the pandemic. The event, consistently named a top art fair on the East Coast, will include artwork from more than 200 artists across 22 categories. There will be paintings in acrylic, watercolor, oil and more, as well as photography, jewelry, furniture, ceramics, glass art and bronze sculpture. The show is always fresh, as each year the artists submit work for a jurying process to be included. Robin Hextrum grew up in Stinson Beach, a small town across the Golden Gate Bridge from San Francisco. Stinson Beach separates the biodiversity of Bolinas Lagoon from the Pacific Ocean. Living in such a beautiful and fragile ecosystem, she has been aware of environmental issues from an early age. Her paintings emerge from the tradition of the 17th-century Golden Age of Dutch painting when, even then, in a time of abundance, painters used references to the ephemeral nature of the abundance and urged moral rectitude. Her finely painted flowers are juxtaposed with stylized flowers expressed in a few brushstrokes. Realm Corey Helford Gallery in Los Angeles, California, hosts an exhibition featuring Hawaii-born artist Jon Ching’s surreal wildlife art. Italian artist Ester Curini found a love of animals at a young age. She recalls, “It began in the small northern Italian town of Casale Monferrato, surrounded by rolling hills full of vineyards and wheat fields. In the 1970s, I was there as a small child. I was utterly in awe of animals and wildlife. Innately, I sketched the animals I would see on any piece of paper I could find. In between these peaceful moments there were times when I witnessed terrible harm being brought to these animals and felt powerless. Michele Kortbawi Wilk has been drawing since she was a girl growing up in Southern California. When she later worked with animals in the motion picture industry, she drew them from life in rare free moments. “My job was taking care of the animals every day,” she says. “Just being around them, I observed their structure and felt their essence.” Her art caught the attention of Hollywood animal trainers such as Frank Inn (owner and trainer of Benji) and Cindy Cullen (whose mother married Edgar Rice Burroughs, the creator of Tarzan). For Josef Kote, style is not something you fall into but is developed over time. From his point of view, artistic style is what you appreciate visually and technically—it’s how you see the world and execute your ideas. “In my particular case, I’ve always wanted to create a [style] that was reflective of me and my personality, and I feel that I’ve achieved that by creating artworks that have a good balance of the combination of realistic and abstract elements,” says Kote, “a [style] that allows me to express my vision.” He continues, “My passion for art and life itself is mostly what inspires my work. Oil painter Eric Karl Johnson is recognized for his landscape and figurative artwork, but also paints series of portraits. In the past he would do commission work, but now these works are for himself. “They are bold and painterly portraits,” he explains, adding that they’re done relatively fast—usually within five hours—to keep the freshness in the works. When Johnson began to pursue a career in art, it was with the goal of being an illustrator. He studied at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California, and then worked for a hospital system doing illustration and graphic design before moving to freelance work. Moscow-based artist Alexander Levchenkov draws from the techniques of applying oil paint to canvas from great artists of the Renaissance to the modern day. Levchenkov’s paintings reflect not only the methods of his ancient predecessors, but the subject matter as well, with many of his works containing historical scenes and subjects.
