Detroit-based artist Gisela McDaniel will create a major public mural titled Things with Feathers as part of The Mistake Room’s trio of newly commissioned public projects for its Art Rise project. McDaniel’s project, an expansive mural and soundscape, is “based on interviews with individuals in Los Angeles and elsewhere whose experiences with violence shed light on the injustices and inequities that the pandemic has exacerbated.” Based in downtown Los Angeles, The Mistake Room is a nonprofit space that supports global arts, culture and ideas.…

The tradition of maritime art will be on full view from June 17 through July 18 at Boston-based Copley Society of Art in its new national exhibition Connected Land and Sea. The show is inspired by the New England coast but includes artwork from artists around the entire country. Participants, including members of CoSo as well as non-members, were selected by renowned marine artist Donald Demers from more than 450 entries. The art, including oils, pastels, sculpture, porcelain and photography, is a range of thematic interpretations. The English poet and painter William Blake wrote, “A fool sees not the same tree that a wise man sees.” The wise artist sees even more. Eric Serritella’s hand-carved ceramic birch sculptures not only fool the eye but engage it with sinuous shapes and a wide range of textures. Unlike the erect, pure forms we see on a forest walk, Serritella’s forms bear the marks of the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune—fires, carved initials, disease. This is a story of joy. A story of heartache. A story of transformation. It begins on a soaring high note and closes on a hopeful flourish. In the middle there is despair and calamity. In mid-July, Gallery Antonia in Chatham, Massachusetts, hosts its Annual Artist Group Show, bringing together the works of such contemporary artists as Carol Maguire, Sue Gilkey, William R. Davis, Eli Cedrone and Barney Levitt. The Wausau Museum of Contemporary Art tackles a broad theme of artwork in their new PoetsArtists show ICONIC, curated by Steven Alan Bennett and Dr. Elaine Melotti Schmidt. There are many iconic or infamous pieces of art throughout history that have signified the pinnacle of an artist’s career. The museum notes that an icon is closely related to the idea of “classic” and “extraordinary.” However, iconic is much more than these loose definitions. “‘Iconic’ is meant to convey something that is bigger than a single theme, subject or idea,” according to the museum, “and that goes beyond the ordinary in terms of the author’s execution and capability…it is not bound by a particular idea or set of principles or one way of seeing. Troy Collins often spends time in nature searching for moments of inspiration, and this can lead to very meaningful works of art. His paintings Chasing Your Heart, The Miracle of a Moment and The Moments that Matter were derived from photographs he took with his wife, Gina, while they were hiking through Grand Teton National Park a couple of years ago. “The day was beautiful—bright blue skies and the aspen magically changing colors throughout the park. We absolutely love Jackson and all of the beauty it has to offer around each and every corner,” Collins says. “It was, in hindsight, one of the last days we would spend together before Gina received her breast cancer diagnosis.” These three pieces, Collins says, “have a special meaning to me because they represent…

Her still life paintings are crisp and clear, bright and jubilant—and brimming with energy. Sometimes, “still life” doesn’t feel like quite the right term, with hummingbirds fluttering around a bowl of peppers or making a literal splash into a martini. “My main focus is to take objects of meaning or that I find beautiful and paint them in their best light. A few months ago, if you asked me if this summer would bring out a number of inperson events, my response may have been completely different. Now, as everything has changed so rapidly in the country, we are seeing a burst of shows anticipating their first outings in almost two years. The scheduled dates are now a full reality, with some even expanding as things continue to open. LA Art Show was one of the last events to take place in 2020 and pivoted to a summertime event for 2021 after first scheduling the show for its usual February dates. A traveling exhibition at the Lyman Allyn Art Museum presents 62 works from The Kerry and C. Betty Davis Collection of African American Art, a body of art collected over a period of more than 35 years by the working-class couple. Award-winning artist Josh Tiessen is releasing a new book this July featuring paintings from his Streams in the Wasteland series. Each image is accompanied by commentary from the artist. In his over two decades showing paintings at Addison Art Gallery, Paul Schulenburg estimates he has completed around 1,000 paintings. Last year, that body of work was condensed and collected in a book featuring 100 of his favorite images. “It was great to have an excuse to go back and look through some of the work I had not seen in many years,” he says. For Bo Bartlett, a daily practice of figure drawing is how he keeps himself in shape for his paintings, like an athlete who goes on a regular morning run. Martha Pettigrew holds a bachelor’s degree in fine arts from the University of Nebraska, with an emphasis on painting and printmaking. Serving for six years as scientific illustrator for the State Museum, she turned to bronze sculpture as a profession in 1992 and has a wide base of collectors including museums, municipalities, corporations and individuals. Several trips to San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, gave her the impetus to get back into painting, using street scenes as subject matter. Adding rural architecture to her repertoire, Pettigrew has been painting barns, grain elevators, sheds and schoolhouses for many years, utilizing clean lines and clear colors. The Portland Museum of Art in Maine holds the first major exhibition celebrating the life and career of artist, curator and scholar David Driskell, who passed away in April 2020 from the coronavirus. For the first time ever, the California Art Club’s annual Gold Medal Exhibition, now in its 110th year, will be showcasing juried selections in Orange County, California. Last year would have been the first time the exhibition was held outside of Los Angeles County, at the Hilbert Museum of California Art, but COVID changed the scene. Cindy Sorley-Keichinger grew up on a farm in East Central Alberta where her parents encouraged an interest in the world around her. She now lives on a grain farm in the Lloydminster, Alberta, area with her husband of 40 years. They have four grown children and seven grandchildren. She originally trained as a medical laboratory technician but has been a painter for 30 years and painting seriously for the past two decades. The artist viewed her early years as her apprenticeship because of being self-taught. Tom Giesler is a self-taught painter whose keen eye reveals his first career as a patent illustrator. He began teaching himself to paint while illustrating products for medical and high-tech companies in Silicon Valley. He exhibited large-scale paintings of imagined organic machines in the San Francisco Bay Area throughout the 1990s and 2000s, and he wrote and illustrated Unventional, a humorous book of patent drawings that resist conformity and expectation.
