Melchior de Hondecoeter (1636-1695), the famed 17th-century Dutch painter of birds, was known in the 19th century as the “Raphael of bird painters.” His Palace of Amsterdam with Exotic Birds depicts his subjects flying and posing freely in a garden with one of the homes of the king in the background. “It’s incomprehensible to think of their being extinct today,” British artist and activist Bryony Bensly observes of de Hondecoeter’s birds. “The lives of animals and our lives are in a precarious position. Larry Preston grew up in Worcester, Massachsuetts, home to the Worcester Art Museum, where he spent time studying and copying its collection of Flemish still lifes when he was in his teens. At the same time, he was into music and played in several Massachusetts bands—a career that spanned 25 years. When asking how his two careers relate, he responds, “I do not consciously think about music while I am painting but because I do both, I am sure that the two interact. Danny Heller has always been fascinated with creating realistic depictions of midcentury modern architecture and classic cars, but his one-man show with George Billis Gallery in Los Angeles couldn’t have come at a better time. “After a difficult year of quarantines,” Heller says, “we’re slowly beginning to leave our homes to once again venture into the outside and the unknown. When Lisa Esherick and Deanna Forbes talk about how they first met each other as young up-and-coming artists in California, the discussion eventually turns toward their art educations, which took place concurrently at the San Francisco Art Institute. “We had the same teachers, including some really great teachers that were well known,” Forbes says. “Well known” is an intriguing hook that begs a follow-up question. As a contemporary realist with a career spanning three decades, Thalia Stratton’s artwork reflects her world and captures moments in time and place. Often she focuses on her travels, particularly to her ancestral home of Greece. There’s an indescribable feeling that you get when coming across a work of art that is so spectacular it stops you in your tracks. Multi-disciplinary artist Do Ho Suh, who frequently moves between New York, London and Seoul, creates installations and full-size, fabric reconstructions that explore ideas of exploring notions of the concept of home, personal history, collectivity, individuality and cultural tradition. Artist Shuai Xu was A born in China in 1995, and graduated from the Oil Painting Department of Tianjin Academy of Fine Arts, China, in 2018. Currently, he is studying in the art department of Claremont Graduate University in the United States. United Kingdom-based realist artist Arina Gordienko is a multi-award winner and finalist of art contests in the U.K., USA and Europe, and her artwork is exhibited in museums and galleries across the world. A form of “imaginative realism,” Gordienko employs classical techniques alongside creative compositions, inserting into her works her own contemporary essence. “I love working in my studio,” says the artist. “I feel peaceful and blessed when I work. 1 Fresh Connections In the February issue of American Art Collector we featured a two-page article on George Billis Gallery’s solo exhibition for artist Peggie Blizard at its Westport, Connecticut, showroom. The gallery, which has a second location in Los Angeles, relocated to this space from New York City in December. After looking at the the magazine spread, featuring Blizard’s oil depictions of flowers in Mason jars, a couple from Connecticut decided to visit the gallery for the very first time and view the works in-person. They ended up purchasing her 36-by-24-inch painting Goldenrod and Anemones, which features a Mason jar that was made between 1926 and 1952. The work has all of the elements Blizard has become known for—lots of color and lots of plays of light, shadow and reflections.…

Collectors Cherye R. and James F. Pierce recently gifted more than 260 photographs to the New Orleans Museum of Art. The collection comes from a range of 19th-century to present day master art photographers, including Ansel Adams as well as Lois Conner, William Eggleston and Deborah Luster. North Carolina-based artist Geoffrey Johnson’s paintings are captivating in their simplicity. They capture real places but are on the edge of abstraction through pared down forms and a minimal color palette. Mostly monochromatic in nature, the works sometimes have splashes of reds or blues, adding dimension to the subtle compositions. May 14 though June 1, Johnson will present around 20 new paintings of all sizes for his annual exhibition at Principle Gallery in Alexandria, Virginia. One of the largest works in the show is Rain with 10 Figures, measuring a commanding 50 by 62 inches. Artist Donald Yatomi was classically trained in the fine arts, but also actively rebels against that very training. The conventionally celebrated images in the fine arts such as romantic scenes, a lovely landscape, cozy interior or beautiful person, do not inspire Yatomi. Instead, he finds himself drawn to mundane slices of life, the very opposite of these traditional subjects—landscapes that are unappealing rather than breathtaking, interiors that are grungy rather than cozy. “I love the challenge of painting the most overlooked and uncelebrated pieces of life,” Yatomi says, “whether they are the landscapes of alleyways and taverns, the interiors of laundromats and toilets, or the homeless people on sidewalks and street corners. Polish artist Aleksandra Staniorowska-Buła creates abstract paintings, primarily in oils, that captivate viewers in unexpected ways. Her working process has two stages. At the beginning, she prepares an under-painting, and then pours a mixture of turpentine and the desired pigment over the primed canvas. A short stage, it lasts one to two hours, “and I have no full control over it,” she says. “The effect of the action of turpentine is random. Although I can control the color and distribution of structural accents, I cannot exclude spontaneous modulation resulting from the turpentine properties or from the differences between individual canvases.
