Our April issue is here, and along with it we are marking the gradual opening of art destinations around the country. States are beginning to move along in their color classifications from yellow to green, and vaccines are being distributed as effectively as possible. All of this leads to the possibility of enjoying art at live events with safety protocols in place. This past year has brought many uncertainties, but there is a hint of optimism that seems to be growing. Galleries and event organizers are starting to have in-person exhibitions and festivals again with safety protocols firmly in place. Some art fairs are even scheduling dates for summer and fall. It’s a cautious optimism, and rightfully so, but it’s more prepared than before. They have already gone through the swift change of conducting business beyond the brick-and-mortar, and online components and festivities have become the norm. Throughout regular conversations with gallerists and artists we’ve heard about virtual appointments, show openings or painting demonstrations, and there are even dealers making digital mockups of homes with art in place. Esteemed artist Kehinde Wiley’s Black Rock Senegal artist residency program has announced the 2021 artists who will have the opportunity to travel to the West African city of Dakar, Senegal. Hailing from across the world the 16 participants will receive room and board, individual studio space and a stipend, spending several weeks in Wiley’s studio along the volcanic rock-lined shore by which the residency program gets its name. The Brooklyn Museum in New York hosts the first-ever retrospective for one of the most important contemporary artists today working in conceptual, feminist and performance art—Lorraine O’Grady. Within her work, O’Grady addresses themes of cultural interconnection and challenges ideas of the fixed position of self. The exhibition, Lorraine O’Grady: Both/And, features 12 major projects O’Grady has produced over her four-decade career, as well as the debut of a highly anticipated new installation.
