Previewing upcoming art exhibitions from coast to coast, American Art Collector is a unique monthly magazine specially designed to bring living representational artists, galleries and active art collectors together in one place.
In preparing this October issue for press, we realized it was number 144. 12 issues. 12 years. And thinking upon it brings us back to the first issue of this magazine 12 years ago. As many of you know, I’ve been the Editor of this magazine since day one. I still remember my publisher, Vincent Miller, telling me on that first day that American Art Collector would bring artists, galleries and collectors together in a way that had never been done before. Fortunately, that is still the case. 12 years, 144 magazines later. As you know, of all the feedback we…
The Southern Experience Columbus artist Bo Bartlett was recently awarded the 2017 Gibbes Society 1858 Southern Contemporary Art Prize, which was sought by over 200 artists from throughout the South. His prizewinning paintings are all set in locations around Columbus, South Carolina, and combine religious themes with contemporary social issues. Though he is primarily recognized for his realist paintings, Bartlett is also well known for his local contributions, such as an art initiative for the homeless called Home is Where the Heart Is. In January 2018, Columbus State University will open the Bo Bartlett Center, designed by architect Tom Kundig. The opening exhibition will feature a retrospective of Bartlett’s work, as well as the work of his peers and influences. Bartlett envisions the center as a place where young artists…

NOWHERE & EVERYWHERE We’re all familiar with the legendary music of Tom Waits, so it should come as no surprise that there are other exceptionally talented people in the Waits family. Daughter Kellesimone Waits’ paintings first caught my attention several years ago when a friend was showing me her humble art collection. I was instantly pulled into the painting—examining the diminutive details on and surrounding this sexy, bikini wearing, half-human half-kitty figure. At…

Our collector’s taste changed from the ubiquitous posters in his dorm room to an eclectic collection that reflects the growth of his varied interests. He liked Miró and the colorful geometry of Mondrian but found himself gravitating to more expressionistic figurative painting. “I tend to like oil paintings,” he says, “always with figures and often two or three. I like brushstrokes and heavier impasto and like to see the hand of the artists and how they make the strokes. I’m also attracted to vibrantly colored art—and how a painting makes me feel. I like art that makes me happy. I like feeling the personality behind a painting. Take Alfred Rogoway’s Medley, for instance. He has to have been in a beautiful place because the painting emanates such good feelings.” As…
