You know I have three grandchildren, all of them wonderful, and in this time of reflection I was thinking of my grandparents, who were glorious.
My grandma was beautiful, stoic and a leader of women. In her day, and my mother’s, it was all about women in the home. You met someone at 16 or 17, got engaged, married and then had babies.
My grandma had three children – she said it was “her duty” – and although she and granddad stayed together for the rest of their lives, she told me her life was her own to do, and be, whatever she wished.
