THE FRIESIAN IS an old, long-established breed with a history dating back to the 13th century. Hailing from the Netherlands, it has powerful conformation and good bone structure, with what is sometimes called a ‘Baroque’ body type.
Throughout history this beautiful breed has been prized for its strength, versatility, disposition and elegance. During the Middle Ages the ancestors of Friesian horses were in great demand as war horses throughout mainland Europe as their size and strength enabled them to carry a knight in armour.
With its dramatic-looking appearance, high, flamboyant action and undoubted ability, the Friesian has featured in many films, starring as the strong, dependable steed in The Mask of Zorro, The Hunger Games and The Chronicles of Narnia series, to name but a few.
