February How to let nature do the sowing In nature, plants drop their seeds as they become ripe. These seeds then sit on the soil and wait until the season and conditions are right for them to germinate. They’re not collected, labelled and stored away in an envelope until the right time of year. Save yourself a job and try mimicking nature – though it’s a good idea to collect a few seeds to share and swap with friends. Martine Connor’s front porch, previously an “aged, unsightly plain concrete”, is now unrecognisable from its former self. The exterior of her Whangārei home has been transformed into a Mediterranean-like beauty, complete with patterned flooring and a bright, bold front door. Martine had previously done stencilling on a patio and thought the porch could benefit from the same treatment. She painted it with a base of Resene Walk-on flooring and paving paint in Resene White, then stencilled on a pattern in Resene Friar Greystone, a gorgeous stone grey, for contrast. Textile designer Imogen Switalla’s life-affirming designs often involve flowers and the colour pink. After initially enrolling in a fine arts course, she switched to textile design when she realised that most of her artwork “was coincidentally a pattern”. Imogen relocated to Melbourne a few months ago, but not before she took out the 2022 Bolt of Cloth Textile Design Award, which means the four designs she entered have been made into cushions and will be sold in store and online.
