The satisfaction of putting your blood, sweat and tears into something that ends up looking great (and saving a few bucks in the process) cannot be underestimated. Collaboration breeds creative confidence for photographers and kindred spirits Brooke Lean (pictured on the left in our photograph) and Gina Fabish. Based in New Plymouth, with six children between them and a shared passion for pushing the envelope, the pair began helping each other photograph weddings six years ago. Colour courage When it comes to adding colour to our homes, most of us take a cautious approach, making do with a feature wall here and a bright cushion or two there. But decorating a whole house in a single hue is pretty much unheard of. Use Resene Sandtex in your chosen Resene colour to take this theme further and create a sandy texture. Desert-inspired interiors have been gaining popularity over the past year and it’s easy to see why – the muted, sunset colours, an emphasis on texture, and iconic images of sun-bleached landscapes, wind-carved dunes, cacti and camels are easy on the eye and together create a welcoming, relaxed ambience. Brekkie BANANA BREAKFAST SORBET SERVES 4 INGREDIENTS 4 medium frozen bananas, broken into pieces (see tips below) 500g frozen strawberries 1 small beetroot, peeled, chopped coarsely 1 Tbsp finely grated fresh ginger 2 cups unsweetened almond milk (see tips below) 250g fresh strawberries, halved 2 golden kiwifruit, peeled, sliced thickly 1 Tbsp white chia seeds 1 Working in 2 batches, place bananas, frozen strawberries, beetroot, ginger and almond milk in a blender. GUEST BEDROOM The judges liked Claire and Agni’s idea for a feature wall but thought black wasn’t the right colour as it didn’t suit their ‘desert chic’ theme. Kristina liked the couple’s use of accessories, particularly the macramé hanging behind the bed. GIFT GIVING Put the environment first by placing small gifts in homemade fabric bags. Here we took some scraps of blue linen and sewed them into little bags. We then folded over the tops and clipped a gift tag to each. Not only do these look great, the recipient can reuse them in the future. It’s the gift bag that keeps on giving! PINBOARD You can make a bulletin board in minutes using an art canvas. We chose a small round canvas and painted it with a testpot of Resene ‘Eskimo’, but leave it plain if you prefer. BUILDING THE DREAM John and Mel Kaczon’s Waihi Beach home isn’t their first new-build, but they think it’s their best. So much so that it might well be their forever home. The couple had their hearts set on a house in Bay of Plenty’s Waihi Beach for many years but it took some time to get there. “Waihi Beach was always where we wanted to bring our children up,” Mel says. “We searched and researched and decided on the subdivision at Maranui Estate – it was close enough to the beach, but far away enough to be safe. 1 TOOLBOX A quality toolbox is the first port of call for any budding DIYer. A decent toolbox can cost as little as $13, depending on your size requirements and the brand. Sometimes the best style inspiration can be found in the past. This bohemian bedroom is my throwback to the 1970s, featuring a groovy colour palette that’s been applied to a modern setting. Dulux ‘Molesworth’ on the walls provides a warm, neutral backdrop which has then been continued on the floor to help create a look of low-key luxury. I had a very specific colour palette in mind for this bedroom, so rather than searching for a piece of art that would fit, I decided to make the art myself. This month we have arrayed tulip magnolias in a series of three vessels. The thick, woody stems of this flower can be difficult to arrange when styled on their own, so we have used pre-soaked oasis blocks to stabilise the stems. The tulip magnolia gives off a sweet scent and can be an attractive sculptural addition to your space. The blooms should last for 7-9 days provided their water is changed daily.…

HARVEST > The best way to avoid bitter lettuces is to pick them at the right time. For crisphead types such as iceberg, butterheads (eg ‘Buttercrunch’) and cos, the central head should be firm. Don’t wait until your lettuce starts to flower or it won’t be worth eating. > Harvest the leaves of leafy lettuces such as oakleaf every few days. > Celery should also not be left in the garden too long or it becomes woody and bitter. Bar carts were a mainstay in many households in the 1950s – although they possibly played the more demure role of tea trolley in your parents’ or grandparents’ house! What is spring without the gorgeous blooms of magnolia, flowering cherries, crab apple or michelia? If you’re a fan of spring blossoms, it’s not too late to plant one of these. There are varieties to suit gardens of every size and some will even grow in pots. Choose somewhere out of the wind and keep the tree well watered. Keep frost cloth and cloches handy in frost-prone areas as October can be tricky weather-wise. Slugs and snails are about in huge numbers at this time of year, so keep an eye out. To say that Leighton Bycroft’s garden is versatile would be an understatement. Despite its compact size, there’s a variety of features and spaces cleverly slotted into this outdoor space in Millwater, Silverdale, making it an ideal hang-out for Leighton, his four sons and their two cats, Harley and Cleo, plus partner Lou and her dog, Macy, who visit regularly.
