For a room design to really have impact it is important to work out what you want to be the hero, or focus, of the room, and then build the scheme around that element. In this cool child’s bedroom the hero is clearly the starry feature wall behind the bed, which sets the ‘outer space’ theme for the whole room. The stars have been made with Resene glow-in-the-dark paint, so once the lights go out the ‘night sky’ effect will come to life (see below). Simply apply two coats of paint in your star colour (we used Resene ‘Alabaster’), followed by a coat of Resene FX Nightlight glow-in-the-dark paint. LAMB SHANKS WITH FIGS & WALNUTS SERVES 4 Figs usually arrive fresh to market in the dying days of April, heralding the arrival of cooler months. Perched prettily in single layers in a rainbow of muted greens and royal purple, figs are, for me, a reminder of the wonderfulness of seasonality because of their short season. Baked with walnuts, freshly harvested, and glazed with quince jelly – another uniquely seasonal fruit – they make an uncommon but delicious partner to slow-roasted lamb shanks; a dish to be enjoyed in autumn with friends. Winter is the best time to plant roses as they’re less likely to suffer any setbacks when in a dormant (or semi-dormant in warmer areas) stage. About 3 weeks before planting dig plenty of organic matter such as sheep pellets, stable manure and/or well-rotted compost into the beds. A sprinkle of dolomite lime will help raise the pH if your soil is a little too acidic (ideally it should be around 6.5). Make sure you’ve chosen a sunny position where there’s plenty of airflow as this helps to reduce fungal disease. Soil needs to be moisture-retentive, ideally a well-drained clay loam. Down at the garden centre or nursery take your time choosing your roses. Ask for those with good disease resistance and make sure plants look healthy with smooth stems…

Cordis was the perfect choice, thanks to a recent renovation to include family rooms complete with kitchen facilities and kid-friendly services. Check-in was an unexpected highlight, with Cordis mascot Cody the Red Panda there to greet us, step ladders so the boys could check in themselves (once they’d finished chasing Cody’s tail), and a stunning lobby space for me to swoon over. Then it was time to explore. Being in the city meant we could reconnect with what we love about central Auckland, and searching for personalised places (like my favourite shops) was made easy thanks to the ‘Handy’ Cordis smartphone provided. ROYAL SUITE If you are aiming to create a whimsical and magical space that your child can dream, play and sleep in, take inspiration from this adorable room design. This royal-themed room has the potential to see them through from toddler to pre-teen by simply changing out a few accessories. The light colour scheme has a playful feel and the decor mixes both modern and traditional styles. Kate and Tim Robinson wanted to create a unique look and feel for the house they purchased from Tim’s parents for their family of eight. “Not surprisingly, the master bedroom was top of the priority list,” Kate says. “We were very keen to sleep in our own room and not feel like we were using Tim’s parents’ bedroom!” However, the couple also wanted to honour the work Tim’s parents had done throughout their 40 years in the house, including stripping back most of the original wooden details to their natural state. BACKGROUND  From the street, the Baird family home in Island Bay, Wellington, is a graceful villa typical of many colonial homes in the capital. But step inside and you’ll find a modern abode complete with concrete floors, a light-filled atrium and a sound-absorbing ceiling. Duncan and Catherine Baird (parents to Gemma, Eva and Greta) found the house online while living in the Hokianga in 2011. So… you find out you’re pregnant. It’s an exciting, joyful time (although it can have its scary and confusing moments, too, if it’s your first child). Cut and dried This month, the clever florists at Wilderness Tribe have used a king protea as the focal point of this wild, foraged arrangement. Acacia, hebe, kowhai and amaranthus act as the base, and twigs were added for height. The stems are secured in floral foam inside a gorgeous brass pot. When you’re a high-powered entrepreneurial couple, quality leisure time is priceless. CUSHION To make this open-back envelope cushion cover, take a piece of 100cm x 50cm faux fur. Place a 50cm x 50cm cushion insert on the fluffy side and wrap the two ends over it so they overlap. Pin side seams to secure, then remove insert. Sew down the sides of the cover, turn right way out and reinsert cushion. DOOR STOP Cut a 34cm x 24cm rectangle and a 12cm-diameter circle out of faux fur. Fold large piece in half, fur-side in, and sew down long side. > What were some of the challenges you faced with this project? 1 Because the original plans were slightly out with the height-to-boundary restrictions, we suggested Katie and Steve gauge their neighbours’ thoughts (and agreement in principle) at concept stage, before seeking resource consent. Katie made some slight alterations in response to one neighbour’s wishes but other than that the resource process was fairly straightforward. 2 Historical (1930s) subsidence meant that parts of the original house were 80mm higher than the 2006 extension. We also wanted to retain the matai flooring. This meant that we had to re-level and re-pile, while protecting the original floor, by painstakingly hand-excavating under the house. There are so many options in terms of colour mixes, they add a very cool feature and feel great under the feet. Go bold with this look but make sure the rest of your bathroom is clean and simple to allow the terrazzo to shine. 2 CONCRETEOR CONCRETE-LOOK Concrete looks great when matched with luxurious finishes such as marble – I love the contrast of the two opposite surfaces. 1 REPETITION Repeating elements such as colour, shape or texture can help to unify a space and create a consistent visual experience. Mismatching carpets, different colour schemes or pick ’n’ mix windows all create confusion in a space. I once worked on a cottage that had been renovated multiple times, resulting in a hodge-podge of window-frame styles and heights. There was no budget to fix them all so I had to come up with a cost-effective solution. I simply drew a 1.2-metre-high line around the room and painted the bottom half in a dark colour (including the frames up to that level) and the top half in white. Immediately the eye was drawn to the consistent, repeating bands of colour encircling the room, not the inconsistent landscape of the windows.…

BUNK TOGETHER If your shared bedroom is small, bunk beds are the best way to go as they utilise vertical space while still leaving room on the floor for storage essentials and playtime. Kiwi actor-turned-florist Spencer Falls may have been based in Los Angeles for 10 years now, but his New Zealand identity still shines through – he runs his business The Unlikely Florist from a converted Volkswagen van.
