Bathrooms are one of my favourite topics to cover, so I was excited about our special bathroom edit in this issue. My husband and I are embarking on our own reno soon and I have been on high alert gathering inspiration for our future bathroom. I think it’s one of those areas you can go a bit wild with – be adventurous with colour, choose a statement tile and go large on plants. Three things (pictured left) on my wish list are mosaic tiles in a colour that reminds me of the ocean, an epic retro sideboard repurposed into a vanity (to link in with our mid-1950s home), and statement tapware. South Islanders Justine and Carrick McLellan have always loved Queenstown’s majestic mountains and stunning natural scenery. But although they wanted their kids, Fletcher, Carter and baby Milla, to grow up in such a beautiful place, the couple weren’t sure they’d ever be able to afford a proper family home in the booming area. The McLellans, who previously owned a house in Lake Hayes, were also keen to start from scratch and create a purpose-built home. THROWS + While a throw is not really something that gets used a lot over the summer, it comes into its own in winter. + One or two throws look great draped over the arm or the back of a sofa and can be used for snuggling up and watching TV. A throw is a great way to add colour to a neutral space, too. CUSHIONS + Cushions have the power to really transform a living space and make the sofa an inviting place to sit. + The number of cushions you should ideally have on a sofa comes back to the style of the room and your personal preference. Sedum, want ’em This month we have arranged some sedum blossoms in a stoneware vessel, just as they are. There is lots of tonal variety in a single stem of sedum, which makes it a gorgeous, sculptural flower. Simply cut stems at varying lengths and display in a vase of fresh water. Cut sedum should last up to 3 weeks if the water is changed regularly.…

COASTER Cut 3 x 80cm lengths of chunky wool. At one end, tie ends together with matching embroidery thread. Plait wool and secure ends with same thread. Lie plait flat on a table and tightly coil it around itself. Use a large darning needle and embroidery thread to add stitches to the underside so the ends and coils all stay firmly in place. PLANT POT Cut 3 x 3.3m lengths of chunky wool. At one end, tie ends with embroidery thread in a matching colour. Plait wool and secure ends with same thread. Trim off excess wool. Use a hot glue gun to glue one end to bottom edge of pot (ours was 14cm x 14cm.) Wind plait round pot then secure with glue; try to start and finish coil…

LIVE THE CULTURAL LIFE The idyllic Coral Coast on the island of Viti Levu is a bustling hub and the perfect place to get a glimpse into traditional Fiji just 1-2 hours’ drive south of Nadi. Simon Raine and Debbie Jones of New Plymouth went all out for their 3-year-old son Elliot’s bedroom. “What started as an idea for a dark blue wall to cosy up his room snowballed into a full outer-space wall!” says Debbie. The primary school teacher (currently a stay-at-home mum) was inspired to go intergalactic when she discovered the glow-in-the-dark Resene FX Nightlight paint at her local Resene ColorShop. This was used in conjunction with Resene ‘Blue Night’ for the inky sky, and soft blue Resene ‘Ashanti’ for the lighter sky. Retro bathrooms are a special breed. They can be so wrong, but aspects of them can be so good (coloured baths and basins, we’re looking at you). Not sure where to start? In 2004 when Siew Ng left Malaysia for New Zealand, her fondest hope was for a house with a garden. “In Malaysia we didn’t have very much land; most houses are terraced units,” she explains. “My garden was entirely in pots over there. What happens when a talented Gisborne florist meets an artistic Icelandic photographer? In the case of Runa Kuru Kristjónsdóttir and Holly Tong, pure magic. The pair’s moody floral photographs, sold as limited-edition artworks, have a growing fan base, a loyal social media following, and have even taken the Gisborne-based pair to Venice where they were finalists in a prestigious art competition. When buying a home that needs renovating it can be tempting to make major changes straight away, rather than getting to know the house and allowing your ideas to evolve. It was 2002 when Sally and Simon Bosley bought their 1980s plaster-clad townhouse in Hillcrest, Auckland. 1 WHERE TO START Work out what you want from your home and write down what you’d need to make this a reality. PERFECT PANCAKES MAKES 8 (SERVES 2) Although made with bananas, these pancakes don’t taste strongly of them. Banana is used to give substance and a natural sweetness, while the quinoa flakes and egg not only add protein but also help bind the mixture. I make these about 1cm thick and very rustic in shape, but if you’ve got a pancake ring, whip it out to make a pretty stack. If you want to double the recipe (especially if you have bananas that need using up), any extra pancakes will keep in the fridge for a few days, or you can freeze them.
