When renovating a 160-square-metre apartment for a family of six, Kristian Lillelund had to come up with a number of clever design and storage solutions. If you prefer neutral colours over brights but are keen to add a simple feature to your child’s room without going over the top, a painted headboard is a great choice. This design will last for years and creates a focal point that any kid would love. To start this project, decide where you’d like to place the headboard; you may prefer it bang in the middle or a little off to one side of the bed, as we have done here. Using painter’s masking tape, mask off a 160cm square, measuring from the skirting board. According to my mother, I was fixated on ponies from the moment I could talk. So when my non-horsey friend Emma told me, rather despairingly, of her unicorn-obsessed daughter’s upcoming birthday, my mission was clear. It was up to me to help keep the magic alive for little Sloan with a beautiful, unicorn-themed fourth birthday party. We chose a lovely meadow for our encounter with the fabled creature and dressed a rustic table with daisies, vines and strawberries. To accommodate any allergies among the unicorn admirers, we kept the food gluten- and dairy-free. + February is one of the hottest months of the year so it’s essential to keep your plants thoroughly hydrated. A long soak is much better than light sprinkles as it encourages deeper rooting, thus helping to give plants better pest- and drought-resistance. But don’t water if there’s been a good rainfall (more than 25mm) in the past week. Adding organic matter to your soil will improve its ability to retain moisture, as will mulching. + Container plants need more water than those in the ground due to their restricted soil area. When Annabelle Plowman opened her eponymous store in October 2016, she was already familiar with the ins and outs of the design world. When she was growing up she often accompanied her mother, Nicki Plowman (who has run fashion, jewellery and furniture businesses), on buying trips around the world and soon developed a keen eye for beautiful design. “Mum was always travelling and importing unique pieces,” she says. David and Kirsty Wraight’s home reveals their joint endeavours as passionate home and business owners. David built the house, which merges villa and farmhouse styles, while Kirsty directed the interior decor and chose the colour scheme. While I wasn’t lucky enough to have a pool growing up, I had a lot of fun hanging out at other people’s pools.
