My Summer Style January is all about sunshine, good times and getting outdoors and we hope our summery, pool-party cover inspires just that! My family are avid campers and childhood summers were spent beachside at various campgrounds dotted around the North Island. It’s only when you look back that you realise just how special those times were – and appreciate for the first time the unbelievable coolness of those floral beach umbrellas and old campers! When Nalani Gloor rediscovered macramé she became hooked on its therapeutic qualities. Nalani’s mother had introduced her daughter to the craft when she was a teenager, but it wasn’t until 2015 that the American fibre artist and interior architect took it up again. Having frequently moved around the world with her family as a child, Nalani says having a creative outlet has been a useful tool to help ground and connect her with new surroundings. Born in California, Nalani and her family relocated to a remote community in Queensland, then to Cairns for high school. Later, she studied in the United States and Australia, before settling in New Zealand. “My family has a history of wandering,” says Nalani, who found macramé helped her settle into her new home in Tauranga.…

A creative Whanganui couple have turned their house into a boutique bed and breakfast, where European guests are often surprised to find colours that remind them of home. Jenny Brown says her training as a textile designer affirmed her love of colour, and describes her husband Peter, who toyed with architecture before training as a lawyer, as very creative. “He’s the detailist and I’m the colourist,” she says. Greeting guests on arrival in the entrance hall is Resene ‘Bittersweet’ with joinery in Resene ‘Quarter Pearl Lusta’. FOOT TRAFFIC Flooring is a long-term commitment and one you want to get right, says Jane Carolan. But there’s no need to be daunted when it comes to making a decision. “The number of people in your household will determine how hardy your flooring needs to be,” she says. “If you have young children or pets, laminate and hardwood are easy-clean options. Arrange a hydrangea The blooming of big, blowsy hydrangeas is one of summer’s true pleasures. Most hydrangeas grown in New Zealand are varieties of Hydrangea macrophylla, often referred to as ‘mophead’ or ‘lacecap’ hydrangeas. Flowers range from white and pale pink to dark blue and purple, depending on the acidity of the soil. Cut stems should be placed in fresh water and kept out of direct sunlight; to prolong vase life, recut stems every day and spritz blooms with cool water. At this time of year, the summer sunshine draws me outside for afternoon cocktails on an almost daily basis, so for this month’s room reveal I decided to imagine a lush and inviting outdoor lounge setting. I was inspired by the Dulux colour forecast for 2018, which identifies a ‘Kinship’ theme consisting of earthy hues with cosy neutral shades. The spicy tones of this palette remind me of a warm Moroccan sunset – sherbet pink skies, sandy dunes and dusty red earth – but I’ve turned that imagined scene on its head by using an earthy red (Dulux ‘Tikitiki’) on the walls and a subtle pink (Dulux ‘Prebbleton’) on the floor. MINT JULEP SERVES 1 INGREDIENTS 10 small fresh mint leaves 30ml sugar syrup (briefly boil equal amounts of sugar and water, stirring until sugar dissolves) 4 dashes Angostura bitters Bourbon Crushed ice 1 sprig mint, to garnish 1 At least 1 hour before serving, place serving glass in fridge to chill. 2 Place mint leaves, syrup and bitters in a large glass or shaker; gently stir and press mint with a spoon. Add 75ml bourbon and stir then leave to macerate for 30 minutes (or up to an hour or so if you prefer a stronger mint flavour). 3 Pack chilled glass with crushed ice and strain julep mixture into it. CUSHION COVERS Take 1m x 1.1m white poplin cotton and cut into 2 strips: 60cm x 1.1m and 40cm x 1.1m. Wash in washing machine and dry. For big cushion: take big strip and tie thick rubber bands around fabric 15cm in from each end. Place more bands 35cm in from each end. Dip middle section in dye then dip ends. Dry overnight, remove bands and dry in clothes dryer for 1 hour to set dye. Make an envelope cushion cover with fabric (find instructions online).
