What’s on our wish list from this issue... Our Christmas issue is our biggest seller of the year and we always have so much fun putting it all together. To make sure this year’s issue was just what you wanted, editorial director Shelley asked our research team to canvass you guys on how you feel about Christmas and what you’d love to see in YH&G to help you prepare for this super-busy time. MEET+GREET Reuben Lamont, 44, Fiona Lamont, 41, Harriet, 4, and Teddy, 2. After a fruitless search that seemed to go on for an eternity, it was as if divine intervention played a part when Reuben and Fiona Lamont bought their character villa in Remuera, Auckland, in mid-2014. “When Reuben was a boy he lived in the same neighbourhood and my grandmother lived just up the road when she was a child,” recalls Fiona. “It was as if fate brought us here.” The couple just happened to be passing one Sunday, spotted the open home sign, walked through and before they knew it, they had made an offer that was accepted later that afternoon. Having a painter in the family helped to make redecorating a dated 1960s stucco house in Whanganui a breeze. Joanna and Brent Eastabrook, an emergency nurse and painter respectively, have been renovating their home one room at a time. Daughter Grace loves pink, Joanna says. “This made it easy to come up with a combination to impress her.” The couple paired Resene ‘Quarter Cavern Pink’, a beautiful rosy pink, with the gorgeous apricot Imaginarium ‘Charm’ wallpaper from Resene, and painted the ceiling and trim in Resene ‘Quarter Black White’. Modern minimal If you live in an apartment or a house with a small patio, you can still have a fun festive season outdoors. Instead of a traditional Christmas tree, find a beautiful branch or decorate a small tree of any kind if you have one. A few white decorations will look clean and classic, especially when placed against a dark wall. Keep colours simple and mostly monochrome, with one or two extra hues for added interest. Remember, things don’t have to look perfect – randomly placed objects will add to the setting’s charm. If you don’t have an outdoor table, place a rug or some mats on the floor to make the space comfortable for picnicking. Coastal Christmas Even if a holiday by the beach isn’t on the cards…

Joy in a jar When it comes to kids, often it’s the little things they love the most. A holiday gift jar filled with tiny presents will give them hours of fun throughout the summer. Look for a jar with a wide top (we got ours from Kmart) then get collecting. Keep an eye out in the supermarket, $2 shop, toy store and op-shop and build up a treasure trove of intriguing treats. If you have time, wrap up a few items for an extra boost of anticipation. Filler ideas: bouncy balls, packs of cards, mini board games, pick-up sticks, marbles, parachute men, dice, a Slinky, wrapped sweets, a key ring, socks, stickers, slime, glitter pens, scented felt-tips and fancy pencils, small notebooks or notepads, fun erasers, hair accessories, lip…

PAINT EFFECT Resene Paint Effects Medium was the perfect product to use on the wall for a dreamy, underwater feel as it creates a two-tone, washed effect. To achieve the effect, paint your base colour first (we used Resene ‘Riptide’). Once dry, take a testpot of your secondary colour (ours was Resene ‘Perfume’) and mix it into the Medium, which is a watery, milky paint. Once mixed in, simply brush it on lightly across the wall. To create the feeling of waves, the paint was applied in a subtle swirl pattern. The finish you want is completely up to you and how you apply the Resene Paint Effects Medium to the wall. If you’d like the top colour to be more dominant, simply add more testpots to the Resene Paint…

BOOZY ICE CREAM WHOOPIE PIES MAKES ABOUT 9 On a hot afternoon these are a delicious replacement for traditional heavy slabs of Christmas cake. They’re still nostalgically spicy but fabulously cooling at the same time and won’t weigh you down. Replace the whisky with a little cranberry juice if you want to make these non-alcoholic. These can be made two days ahead. MEET + GREET Gemma Yeoman, 38 (botanical stylist at Flora n Fauna), Greg Yeoman, 46 (director and designer at Stormwater360), and Ivy, 5, plus Cha Cha the cat. It was a transformation 15 years in the making, but Gemma and Greg Yeoman have turned their tiny, run-down 1940s cottage into a stylish tropical sanctuary. IN THE CAN Canisters are great for presenting foodie gifts such as meringues and homemade biscuits or small items like jewellery or a beautiful ceramic ornament or candleholder (all carefully wrapped in tissue paper, of course). Muesli by Steph Attwater · chief sub editor + Prepare 2½ cups mixed nuts and seeds (I used roughly chopped raw almonds, a few roughly chopped brazil nuts and walnuts, pumpkin seeds and sunflower seeds). I love Christmas! I always have. When I was younger, we’d get to the first week of October and I’d start planning how I was going to decorate my bedroom for Christmas! Things haven’t really changed and I’m just as eager to prepare for the festivities – but this year I was faced with a dilemma over space. FEATHER WREATH The beauty of a wreath is that it’s Christmassy but also super-versatile. To create this feathered version simply wrap two navy feather boas around a polystyrene ring and secure them at the back with glue. 15 MINUTES $26 HOW TO:  + Take a 35cm-diameter polystyrene ring and glue one end of the first feather boa to the back. WREATH To make a beaded wreath take a 25cm galvanised metal ring (ours was from Spotlight) and cut the join so you can bend it open. Thread beads onto ring in a pattern of your choice; ours was 1 big bead then 3 small (37 beads in total). Once the ring is full, bind the metal ends together with sticky tape – we wrapped it around about 5 times for a strong join. Take a length of wide ribbon about 75cm long, tie it over the join to disguise it, tie the loose ends together and hang. GARLAND Create a beaded garland that can be displayed all year round.
