Built for privacy, this 32-square-metre covered patio features full-height white curtains and a built-in, upholstered seat that brings a soft element. A metal screen was placed above it to provide interest and will eventually be covered in a flowering vine, adding to the mix of plants displayed in various pots. The space’s existing Moroccan style was updated by adding a few well-chosen accessories that suit the silver travertine (a form of limestone) floor and concrete-topped table. An existing marble-topped table with metal legs was enhanced by the addition of a large, planted brass urn and a tall hurricane lamp. Canterbury interior design fans have reason to celebrate with the New Zealand launch of H&M Home. The on-trend and affordable homeware range is stocked in a section of the city’s new H&M store in the recently opened retail complex The Crossing on Cashel Street. The impressive 2535-square-metre, two-level store, which also stocks women’s, men’s and children’s lines, is the Swedish retailer’s second outlet in New Zealand (its first store opened at Sylvia Park in Auckland late last year.) On a recent trip to Marrakech in western Morocco, I had the true pleasure of staying in a boutique riad called El-Fenn. Marrakech is full of riads – large houses built around interior courtyards – many of which have been converted into hotels and private accommodation for visitors, making it a city of hidden oases. Stunningly renovated by Vanessa Branson (Sir Richard Branson’s sister) and her partner, El-Fenn is something special. It’s safe to say we Kiwis are fans of outdoor living. We tend to design our houses to be as open to the outside as possible, and our decks and terraces are increasingly functioning as outdoor rooms that can be used year-round. An ad hoc gardening approach that worked with the land’s natural shape has led to this laidback, verdant garden. With its recycled vibe and air of mystery, it invites you to discover its secrets. Rather than removing an old camphor laurel tree that had died, the stump was left to become a home for a blanket of philodendron, which helps add to the rainforest feel. The emphasis here is on foliage rather than flowers, with lots of colourful crotons, cordylines and plants with variegated leaves filling every nook. The garden was built up using found items, cuttings, and low-cost plants, and paths were created out of different materials such as recycled pavers, large river stones and old fence palings. This 1928 home boasts a fabulous view of water, trees, houses and boats and this seaside feel is reflected in its weathered, lived-in outdoor spaces. TOTE BAG Cut 15cm off bottom of 2 tea towels; place on top of each other, right sides out, to form bag shape. Take 2 lengths of thick canvas tape (ours were 4cm x 1m) and pin on either side of ‘bag’ about 12cm in from sides and 16cm in from top. Now with right sides facing in, pin tea towels together. This 1200-square-metre garden is close to the beach so it has been planted with vegetation that likes coastal conditions.
