Flower trends come and go but cut roses are always a classic choice. Here we have featured ‘Wedding Rose’ which is a locally grown flower specifically cultivated for cut stems. We have arranged the roses with astilbe, bay leaves and phalaenopsis orchids. When arranging rose stems, remove three-quarters of the foliage and trim the stem on an angle, being careful of the thorns. GREEN DRESSING Pulse 2 cloves garlic, 1 Tbsp Dijon mustard, 3 Tbsp lemon juice, 1 Tbsp sugar and 1 tsp chilli flakes in a food processor to break down the garlic. Add large handful each parsley (including stems), coriander (including roots) and spinach then blitz to paste. With motor running, add 3 Tbsp white wine vinegar then drizzle in 1 cup rice bran oil. Season with salt and pepper to taste. PICKLED RED ONIONS Bring 2 cups water to boil, remove from heat and add 2 thinly sliced red onions, then drain. Identical twins Julia and Alexandra (Ali) Heaney, 28, own a design company together and Ali has an architecture degree, which made Team Blue seem pretty formidable going into The Block NZ 2017. PLACEMATS & COASTERS As a base for the rope to sit on we used an MDF coaster and placemat. Apply glue to MDF and, starting at centre, wind rope around itself to make a spiral. We used 1.3m rope for coaster, 7.7m for mat, but depends on thickness. Tuck end under coil or seal with clear craft glue. KEY RING Thread a key ring onto 30cm of cotton rope then fold in half with ring at loop end. Take embroidery thread, knot one end around rope 5cm below loop and wind around middle section of rope; use single colour or create stripes with different colours; knot at the end. Unravel rope ends to create tassels. PLANT POTS This is a great way to add texture and revamp tired plant pots.…
