SCANDI BEFORE When we moved into the house five years ago we were not overly fond of the laundry/bathroom. It was cramped, the cabinets were swollen and warped from water damage, the tiling workmanship was poor, the hot-water cylinder took up a lot of space and the storage was open wire shelving. Also, with no underfloor insulation the floors were cold. THE BRIEF To brighten and warm up the space, increase storage, add a shower and bath, and have a bathroom basin and cabinet integrated into a single countertop which transitions through to the laundry. How to upcycle a wooden chair Renovating a wooden chair is simpler than restoring an upholstered one. Pick a chair that’s structurally sound and timeless in style, yet has that little spark that gets you excited. 1 Take lots of pictures of your chair – front, back, inside and top. Taking ‘before’ photos is a useful reference for future projects. 2 Clean your chair with water and detergent to remove every scrap of dirt, oil, wax, grime and any stickers. 3 Lightly sand the chair. Erica is a bushy, bell-shaped floral with a woody stem, also known as heath or heather. In autumn and early winter you can buy cut stems in pink and white. Dear Carol We are looking for some suggestions for a tricky part of our garden. The area is behind our carport and is approximately 6 by 3 metres. It’s partly surrounded on three sides by walls, doors and windows. It faces east, slopes on the northern edge and is sheltered by the walls and a fence. There used to be a pond here surrounded by large flax, making the doors and windows unusable. The soil is mostly clay. As baby Austen gets bigger and a lot more mobile, we have started to contemplate the next phase for his bedroom. He now enjoys sitting and playing in and around his bed, so giving him the ability to climb in and out by himself has become important. TOP TIPS > There are many ways to install a floating shelf, depending on what you plan to use it for and the weight of the objects you will be placing on it. Tina says: THE PROBLEM The bathroom, although only 10 years old, felt shabby and dated. The tiles were in good condition but had a slight peach tint to them, which was highlighted by the adjacent cool white wall colour. The vanity was an odd freestanding unit with a DIY base, which looked unfinished. Silver hardware and a halogen wall light were in need of replacement. The bathroom also lacked flat surfaces for toiletries and there was minimal storage. Despite all this, the bathroom was in good condition, so an update rather than a full renovation was the most cost-appropriate solution. A quarter-century ago, when Paresh and Naina Patel bought their 370-square-metre property in the up-and-coming suburb of Grey Lynn, they were blissfully unaware of what a savvy investment it would be. “We chose the area because we couldn’t afford Ponsonby,” laughs Paresh. “It was an old square-front villa with three bedrooms in serious need of restoration.” The home had plenty of positives, though, including the fact it was close to Auckland’s CBD and had a north-facing aspect with a veranda looking out over Cox’s Bay. PINBOARD Draw a 30cm x 26cm hexagon onto a piece of foamboard. Cut out using a ruler and craft knife. Use this as a template to cut out 7 more hexagons. Place template on felt and draw around it. Cut out, allowing a 2-3cm border all around. Glue felt edges with a hot glue gun and fold over foamboard, securing at back. Repeat for all hexagons. Once glue is dry, attach 3M picture strips to back of each and hang in desired pattern. GARLAND Cut out 15 felt ‘tongue’ shapes measuring 14cm x 8cm in varying colours. Turn the top 2cm over and sew along edge to make an opening for the ribbon. Thread shapes onto ribbon or cord and hang. LIGHTSHADE Take a drum lightshade (ours was 35cm diameter)…
