This month we are sharing a sneaky peek of our family beach house, which was built a few years ago on our own little piece of paradise in Whananaki, Northland. We used hardwood plywood panels for the interior of the house, fixed horizontally and at random across the width of the walls. Due to the natural grain of the ply, each panel has a beautiful and unique pattern, and the wood’s slightly pinkish tone lends a wonderfully warm light to the rooms. I’ve had fun restyling the master bedroom for this room reveal. I wanted to create a light and relaxing space, drawing colours from the plywood and from the natural environment the house is set in, close to a beautiful east coast beach. Keri Clarke, a graphic designer and co-founder of the Be Your Own Heroine website, and husband Wayne, a company general manager, have lived in their Flat Bush, Auckland, home for six years. They wanted their new daughter’s nursery to be stylish and not “too saccharine”. To turn an off-white wall into a feature, Keri came up with a triangle print, using a candy-floss pink, Resene ‘Blossom’, and Resene ‘Moonbeam’, a pale lemon yellow. The grand old 1950s house that is now home to Ben and Megan Hoskin and their three children, sits on a Tauranga hilltop and enjoys views of Mount Maunganui’s inner harbour. It is a house the couple had often admired while driving past – its character, age and big section greatly appealed – so they acted smartly when the opportunity arose to buy it four years ago. “We love old character homes, but they can be quite hard to find in Tauranga,” Ben says. When Vicki and Marco Canestri decided to build an outdoor kitchen in their Waiheke Island garden, the biggest priority was a pizza oven. After months of research they found the perfect one, which was then transported from suppliers Authentic Oven in Tauranga. Once the oven was installed, the couple decorated the front of it with the beautiful tiles Marco had ordered from Deruta, a small town in the province of Perugia, Italy. LAWS OF THE JUNGLE Tropical-looking indoor plants are back in fashion in a big way. If you want to create a tropical paradise inside your home or workplace, focus on grouping the correct types of foliage together. WINE GLASS HOLDER You’ll need a piece of pine 280mm x 800mm x 19mm thick, and 8 x 75mm flat-head nails. Measure 10cm down from short end of pine and draw a faint line across. Mark line at 6cm, 8cm, 20cm and 22cm then hammer in nails at these points; leave nails protruding enough to hang your wine glasses from. Draw another line 45cm down from same edge, and repeat. Melamine resin was invented in the 1930s and put into service during the Second World War. Dear Carol My son Harvey, 10, and I moved to our dream location in Waikaraka, Whangarei, four years ago.
