Soft greens and clean lines will bring a sense of calm to the busy Christmas period RELAXED DINING Minimalists and meditative types will love this calm dining room setting, which features sleek details and styling. We’ve created a tonal colour scheme using several soft greens, adding occasional darker pops to bring out the green of the tree. In keeping with the minimal look, the table setting is simple, with just a touch of greenery. Over the past few years we have seen the move away from bright colours to a more subdued colour palette in kids’ rooms. DINING One of Virginie’s favourite pieces of furniture is the vintage oak trestle table, which has seen plenty of family meals and celebrations. Tolix stools alternate with traditional chairs around the table. Keeping a wreath simple yet rustic with the addition of zinc stars adds plenty of interest. Schleich animals create a novel nativity scene in a stick house given as a gift to Virginie by some of her closest French friends. Transform a simple wire hoop (we got ours from Spotlight) into a botanical masterpiece with your favourite foraged foliage. Here we have used birch, conifer and Queen Anne’s lace, plus foliage we found while gathering the flowers. Start with the twiggy birch to create a base and give it some linear structure. Tie this on with florist wire. Add the conifer and foliage, finishing with pieces of Queen Anne’s lace to give a wild look. The wreath should last up to three weeks and will dry nicely. You could decorate it further by adding seed lights or pieces of fabric tied to the top. For more festive floral ideas, see page 138.…

Festive floral hanging Why not opt for a gorgeous, long-lasting floral hanging instead of a wreath this Christmas? We used tulip magnolia branches to create a strong linear structure for the base of the hanging. Bind branches together with florist’s reel wire. Position orchids as the focal point of the piece and attach with wire (taking care not to damage the heads). Place pieces of cryptandra and foraged foliage around the orchids, leaving space in the middle for visual interest. Once you are happy with the placement, secure everything with wire and hang with jute string. This should last between 2-3 weeks, so you will be able to enjoy it in the lead-up to Christmas. 1 Hessian sack This is a great choice for a tree that is exposed from all sides. Measure how long and high the hessian will need to be to cover your tree base. Double the height and add another 10cm to allow for a fold-over. Cut hessian accordingly. Fold in half horizontally and staple along the top where the edges meet. Fold stapled edge over twice (to hide staples). Now fold the hessian around the tree (this is the tricky part). Once you have done this, take the two ends and fold both inwards to create a seamless join. Use a hot glue gun to make the join secure. 2 Canvas bag Canvas is a great material for this project. I make an annual photo book of the previous year and get it printed into a hardcover book which the kids get to open on Christmas Eve. They love looking at all the photos of the past year on paper! HONESTY BOX + Vanessa, what were the best lessons learned? To never take on a renovation when you are time poor. We started ours the first day of the October school holidays, which is my busiest time work-wise. I don’t think there is ever a good time to undertake a renovation, but I had my heart set on it being done for Christmas so we could enjoy it. Background Sharon Clarke bought her little slice of paradise in Doubtless Bay in the Far North, in 2011 – pretty savvy buying considering she was only 20 at the time. “It was a fairly impulsive purchase,” recalls Sharon. “I didn’t have any real plan of what I wanted to do with it. Katie Smith and husband James Littlewood revamped their 1940s home in Auckland, which they share with daughters Lucy and Stellar, using vibrant colours from Resene. Choosing shades came naturally to textile designer Katie. “As a family we are very fond of colour,” she explains. “I wanted the main areas upstairs to work in harmony, with a bit of a vintage flavour. PAPER ANGELS The kids will love to help make these decorations. These cute little paper angels look great on a tree or hung on the wall with tape in a child’s room. They also make great toppers for wrapped presents. 1 To make the skirt for your angel, take a sheet of 15cm x 15cm scrapbook paper and concertina it to make a fan. 2 To make the wings, take another piece of scrapbook paper, cut it to 12cm x 12cm and concertina it. 3 Fold both fans in half. Lay wings above skirt on a flat surface. 4 Double over the cord and use to tie the wings and skirt together in the middle with a double knot, with the ends of the cord extending above the wings. 5…

1 RUSTIC NAIL Tree decorations can be used for many things at Christmas and don’t always have to live on a tree. This modern, rustic design has been created using pine planks measuring 20cm, 40cm, 60cm, 80cm and 1m. The pine was painted in a testpot of Resene ‘Biscay’ and adorned with decorations hung on copper nails. Our wooden strips were hung using Velcro picture strips for easy removal. 2 FELT Simplicity is the key to this look. Take 1m thick felt and draw a tree shape onto it, using our image as a guide. I remember hunting for the prettiest blooms and squishing them between baking paper and big books. This time I cheated and used pre-dried flowers from a Markantonia arrangement (you could also use potpourri). I still experienced a wave of nostalgia when I made this project again decades later. Surely that translates into a meaningful gift! INSTRUCTIONS 1 Pick flowers in the morning when they have just opened. Our house looks out to the ocean and the Harbour Bridge, and we have a cute little beach at the end of the street where I often take the boys on ‘treasure-hunting trips’ to collect shells, feathers and sticks. HONESTY BOX + Any disasters? Having to move the power cables, and breaking one pane of glass. + Best memory in your bach? Staying in the container for the first time with Dad once the toilet had been fitted. It was filled with tools and building materials.
