CLUTCH, sling, tote, bucket, barrel and hobo – there’s a handbag for just about every occasion.
But none is quite as coveted as the Birkin bag – especially the very first one.
This much was evident recently when the scuffed, scratched and stained original black leather Hermès Birkin sold at auction for a staggering $10 million (R180m) after a heated 10-minute bidding war.
It was bought by Japanese businessman Shinsuke Sakimoto, who says it will be publicly exhibited.
Before becoming the pinnacle of luxury indulgence, the roomy bag was a practical necessity. It was created by Jean-Louis Dumas, the artistic director and chairman of luxury French fashion house Hermès and based on a design by British actress and singer Jane Birkin.
