CONFUSED about the difference between dry and dehydrated skin? You’re not alone.
While “dry skin” and “dehydrated skin” are often used interchangeably, they refer to different conditions, explains Dr Bhavna Singh, a specialist dermatologist based in Umhlanga, KwaZulu-Natal.
Although their characteristics overlap, each requires specific skincare ingredients to support the skin barrier and maintain healthy skin. “Both conditions can cause dry, rough, flaky, tight or itchy skin, but dehydrated skin can also affect oily skin types. Other signs of dehydration include tiredness, dullness and more pronounced fine lines,” she says.
“Though dry skin can be an inherited condition, factors such as cold or dry climates, excessively hot showers, drying products and ageing also contribute.”
