THE weekend before this issue went to print, I found myself marvelling at a kind of Valentine’s photo taken from space by Voyager 1 on 14 February 1990. In the photo, our planet is vaguely visible as an illuminated speck surrounded by darkness. The photo is known as Pale Blue Dot. In his book of the same name, the astronomer Carl Sagan wrote in 1994: “Consider again that dot. That’s here. That’s home. That’s us. On it everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever was, lived out their lives.” He died two years later. ESKOM SETS SOLAR DEADLINE Power utility prioritises safety and performance ESKOM has set a March 2026 deadline for South African households with grid-connected solar systems to register with the power utility, aiming to improve grid safety and performance as reliance on solar power grows. The requirement is enforced by the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (Nersa) and affects around 48 000 Eskom-supplied homes. Those who register systems up to 50KW before the deadline could avoid compliance fees, which typically range from R5 000 to R10 000. The power utility says all solar users must comply, while off-grid users need to prove their systems function independently of Eskom.
