THE LOWDOWN
Winnie was an independent woman and had already earned a degree in social work by the time she met Nelson Mandela. She was standing at a bus stop in Soweto, Johannesburg, when he approached her and asked her to a lunch date. They fell in love and got married in 1958, later welcoming daughters Zenani and Zindziswa.
But five years after they wed, Madiba was sent to prison.
After her husband was jailed, she became more and more involved in politics. “The harder they try to silence him, the louder I will become,” she said at the time.
