THIS little salamander has a very special skill. When part of their body is injured or lost, whether it’s a leg, muscle or organ, they can simply regrow it! The cells at the injury spot divide quickly, creating a perfect copy of the missing body part. Sadly, because their habitat is tiny and under threat, there aren’t very many of them left in the wild.
VALUABLE TO SCIENCE
Biologists research axolotls to learn how they manage to regenerate tissue.
ENDANGERED SPECIES
There are less than 1000 axolotls left in the wild.
COLOUR
In the wild, axolotls are usually greyish brown, but those kept as pets are lighter in colour, with white bodies and pink gills, because they all descend from one captive axolotl who had a skin condition.
