IT WAS a day we knew would come but somehow couldn’t imagine. Most of us have never known the world without Queen Elizabeth II in it, going about her business with stoicism and resolve, heading a difficult, troubled family with dignity and diplomacy, overseeing prime ministers, meeting princes and presidents, doing her bit decade after decade.
Over the past few years Elizabeth had grown frailer, a tiny figure battling mobility issues and the various vagaries of age. She appeared less and less in public but when she did, what a joy it was – her twinkling smile, her kind eyes, her upbeat words making people hope she had many years ahead.
Now she’s gone and although the world will carry on regardless, it will be poorer for her absence.
