SOUTH AFRICA’S national fish isn’t the powerful great white shark, the colourful SA butterfly fish or the commercially important sardine. It is, in fact, the galjoen, aka the black bream or blackfish (Dichistius capensis), a species of fish found only along the coast of southern Africa, from Angola to South Africa.

AS A LINE FISH
It’s a popular fish among shore fishermen, especially in the Western Cape. Galjoen may only be caught from 1 March to 14 October (outside breeding season) and a maximum of two (at least 35cm each) a day. You must have a permit for it.
