YOU might have seen this bird in a park or zoo, or on our old 5c coins. The beautiful blue crane (Grus paradisea) is SA’s national bird and is also known as the paradise crane or Stanley crane. They look different from other cranes with their greyish blue feathers and extra-long wingtips that nearly touch the ground. And they can dance!
HABITAT AND DISTRIBUTION
• Indigenous to South Africa, with more than 99% of blue cranes occurring here, especially in the Overberg region of the Western Cape, in the Free State, the western parts of KwaZulu-Natal, and in southern Mpumalanga.
• Habitat is wide open spaces, such as the grasslands of the Highveld, the Karoo plains and on open farmland.
