The South African Reserve Bank (SARB) has an inflation target of between 3% and 6%. The central bank uses monetary policy tools – especially the control of short-term interest rates – to keep inflation in line with its target. Once inflation goes above the target, interest rates are increased, which means commercial banks pay higher interest on the loans they make from the SARB.
