WE OFTEN cover stories about people who have overcome extreme adversity and immense challenges to make something of their lives. These people are inspiring and uplifting and remind me that, no matter how hard life can sometimes be, we should always look for that proverbial silver lining. In this issue, we have two such stories. One is about a Johannesburg woman with a debilitating skin condition who has refused to allow it to define her and prevent her from living a full life. She went through agony to become a mom, but she did it three times over and she’s sharing her story to educate others and help people who may be struggling too. Now these two monstrosities are unable to function at full capacity and are merely symbols, nay rather monuments, to state capture and corruption, a conduit to the vaults of the state. Those who damage or (call it what it really is) sabotage various power-generating facilities are to my mind traitors and should be hounded and treated as such. THE Panama Canal is an 82km manmade channel that divides North and South America. It cuts through the Panama Isthmus and connects the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. Along with the Suez Canal in Egypt, it’s one of the most strategically important artificial waterways in the world. Before this shipping channel was completed, it could take a ship travelling from New York on America’s east coast to San Francisco on the west coast about a month to complete the journey. ENZYME BREAKS DOWN PLASTIC FAST A newly discovered enzyme can break down a plastic container in less than a day – something that would normally take hundreds of years. The enzyme, dubbed PHL7, was discovered in a German cemetery. Scientists tested it in a laboratory and discovered it can completely degrade 90% of PET (a type of plastic) within 16 hours. When Msituni the giraffe was born on 1 February, zookeepers at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park in the US immediately knew something was wrong. The calf’s front leg was bent the wrong way. Because of her condition, her other legs had to work really hard to carry her weight and maintain balance and the strain on her joints caused more problems.
