Ukraine is the world’s largest producer of sunflower seeds, followed by Russia. In 2021-2022, Ukraine produced 17,5 million tons of seeds and Russia 15,5 million tons. Ukraine is also the world’s top sunflower-oil manufacturer. Combined, the two countries produce about 60% of the world’s sunflower oil. Compared to this, South Africa’s sunflower seed harvest for the 2020-2021 season was only about 678 000 tons. We import a lot more than what we produce. IN ANOTHER incredible discovery, the Hubble Space Telescope has found light from the furthest star ever seen by humans. The star is so distant it took about 12,9 billion years for its light to reach Earth. Scientists are calling it Earendel – the word is from Old English and means “morning star”. It was found by chance when a galaxy cluster happened to be between Hubble and Earendel. The galaxy cluster worked almost like a giant magnifying glass, enlarging the light from Earendel so that Hubble could take a picture of it. In 2008, at the age of 57, she became guardian to my nephews, aged nine and three, when their parents passed away. She had to fight to get their road accident fund money, which eventually took nine years. My dad passed away in 2013 leaving her alone with my nephews.
