For most young children it’s important to use an age-appropriate toothpaste that contains less fluoride – about 500ppm – than standard products, to decrease the risk of fluorosis associated with swallowing the paste. Fluorosis occurs when too much fluoride is absorbed, causing white marks on the teeth. Brushing teeth without toothpaste is recommended until the age of 18 months, when you should introduce a low-fluoride toothpaste and use it until your child is six years old. Encouraging children to use a pea-sized amount of toothpaste and ensuring that they spit the paste out rather than swallowing it is also advised. I rent a flat on a beautiful farm in the Eastern Cape. Chickens run around freely as nature intended. I call out, “Gip gip gip” and in an incredibly short time 10 hens and a Rhode Island red rooster are standing in front of me. I then throw bits of bread to them so they each get a piece. You have to be quick – they’re fast and gobble down the bread at lightning speed. To my amazement the rooster doesn’t touch the bread but he once picked up a piece and instead of gobbling it down, placed it in front of a hen. This is magic to watch.
