RHINO ORPHANS BECOME PARENTS The birth of a female rhino calf at the Care for Wild Rhino Sanctuary in Mpumalanga is cause for celebration. It’s the first time two orphaned rhinos have naturally conceived and birthed a calf together, without human interference. Both of the calf’s parents are southern white rhinos who were orphaned eight years ago when their moms were killed by poachers. SHIP CARRYING LUXURY CARS SINKS Car manufacturer Volkswagen is investigating the cause of a blaze aboard a cargo ship which was carrying thousands of its cars. In February, the Felicity Ace sank in the Atlantic Ocean after it caught fire. The vessel was transporting nearly 4 000 luxury cars from Germany to the US when the fire broke out, forcing the crew to abandon ship. The fire couldn’t be put out and the destroyed ship was towed to a safe harbour, where it then sank. The luxury cargo on board included Audis, Lamborghinis, Porsches and Bentleys – all made by the Volkswagen Group. RARE CONDITION MAKES CHILD'S HAIR UNCOMBABLE This little boy turns heads wherever he goes. Locklan Samples from Georgia in the US has a rare condition that makes his hair stand out from the scalp, which means it can’t be combed flat. Locklan has uncombable hair syndrome (UHS). Human hair is usually cylindrical but the hair of someone with UHS is more triangular and has small grooves in it, making it impossible to comb it flat. The condition typically develops in childhood, around three years old and up to 12. There are only about 100 known cases worldwide.
