My heart broke when I read the winning letter from Silent Sufferer (YOU, 10 February). In my case the abuse came from my parents, who were regarded as pillars of the community. I was the second daughter born to a couple who wanted boys. Later on, when my brothers were born, they were treated completely differently from us girls. IT DOESN’T look like much – 18 tiny dots on a dark background – but it’s a pretty big deal for science. The James Webb Telescope recently sent back its first image from space, a star named HD 84406. This is a great milestone following the enormous amount of time and effort spent building and launching the telescope. The picture features several hazy white dots on a black background. Every dot is the same star viewed differently in the 18 hexagonal (see Word of the Week) parts of the telescope’s giant golden mirror. Each part captured an image of the star – almost like 18 different telescopes. Engineers are now adjusting the segments to make them work together. NEW fossil finds have experts rethinking the timeline of our prehistoric ancestors. A child’s tooth and stone tools were recently discovered in a cave in the south of France. This discovery seems to indicate that Homo sapiens (modern humans) lived in Europe 54 000 years ago, which is much earlier than previously thought. Before discovering the fossils, it was thought that Neanderthals lived in Europe from around 400 000 years ago and disappeared about 40 000 years ago, not long after Homo sapiens arrived in Europe from Africa. Car maker BMW has unveiled a new car that can change colours at the touch of a button. The car is covered in a specially developed body wrap featuring millions of microcapsules suspended in a liquid. The capsules contain ink pigments with differently charged particles within them. When an electric charge is applied to the wrap, the colours change.
