Bulimia nervosa is a serious eating disorder that usually starts developing in adolescence or early adulthood, says Dr Rosa Bredekamp, a counselling psychologist from Durbanville in Cape Town. Sufferers are prone to binge eating. To try to control their weight they often make themselves vomit, abuse laxatives, over-exercise or fast for long periods. “This unhealthy pattern can lead to serious medical issues,” she says. Bulimics typically have an increased awareness of their weight, low self-esteem and symptoms of depression and social anxiety. “Negative comments only damage those with a poor body image and can trigger eating disorders,” Dr Bredekamp warns. Today my daughter told me she had breast cancer. My first thought after the initial shock was, “It should be me, not her.” She’s only 50. The formal process of exchanging information about witnesses and evidence, known as discovery, has started. Judge Kaplan ordered both parties must disclose their expert witnesses by 13 May, and file a joint pretrial proposal by 28 July.
