This is in response to the letter complaining about supermarket cashiers and packers (YOU Say, 16 December). Whenever I visit South Africa I really appreciate the chatty bag packers. I moved from SA to Belgium a couple of years ago, and in Belgium and most of Europe we have to pack our own bags. The teller rings up your groceries and you are expected to fill your bags yourself, and if you are not quick enough you hold up the people behind you. Maybe you should tell the cashier from the get-go that you don’t require any bags, or place your cotton bags on the conveyor belt before you load on your shopping.
