OVER the past few weeks, 162 national teams gathered to take part in the Paralympics in Tokyo, Japan. The event took place after a year-long delay due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
The Paralympics, shortened from Parallel Olympics (which means running alongside), is held every four years. It follows the Olympic Games and takes place in the same host city.
The athletes, who compete in sports like wheelchair rugby, archery, athletics, swimming, badminton and boccia (a ball sport like bowls), all have physical, mental or sensory disabilities.
Although they face constraints, they show the world the true meaning of determination.
This is why the Paralympics is a testimony to courage, determination, inspiration and equality.
Over the years the event has grown from just a few hundred athletes to thousands.
