I always think of it when I properly see the stars (sadly, not often enough because of the bright city lights). PEANUT BUTTER CRUMPETS MAKES 12-15 PREPARATION: 15 MIN COOKING: 2 MIN EACH 500ml (2c) flour 10ml (2t) baking powder 5ml (1t) salt 1 egg 310ml (1¼c) milk 60ml (¼c) peanut butter TOPPING 250ml (1c) icing sugar 60ml (¼c) peanut butter extra peanuts 1 Sift the dry ingredients together in a large bowl. 2 Whisk the egg, milk and peanut butter together and slowly whisk into the dry ingredients, making sure the batter is free of lumps. BEES ARE USING ANIMAL POO TO PROTECT THEIR HIVES Bees in America have found a smart way to deter Asian giant hornets from attacking their hives, researchers say. The hornets attack the hives and kill thousands of bees to feed their own larvae. Asian giant hornets have hard exoskeletons, so the much smaller honeybees find it hard to defend themselves. But now researchers have observed the bees placing small lumps of poo (from, for example, bison and other farm animals) at the entrance of their hives. SCIENTISTS working off the west coast of Mexico have discovered a previously unknown whale species. “It just sends chills up and down my spine that we might have accomplished what most people would say was truly impossible – finding a large mammal that exists on this Earth that is totally unknown to science,” Jay Barlow, one of the researchers, said. The group had recorded an unidentified acoustic signal – the sound whales make – and wanted to find its source. They spotted three beaked whales, took pictures and video recordings and recorded their sounds by using an underwater microphone.
