SCIENTISTS were at last able to thoroughly examine two mummies that were discovered more than 400 years ago – thanks to a CT scanner (see box). This has meant they’ve avoided damaging the mummies because they didn’t have to open them up. The mummies were found in an Egyptian tomb in 1615 and are examples of stucco-shrouded portrait mummies. That means they weren’t buried in a sarcophagus (stone coffin) like other mummies. The cadavers were put on wooden planks, wrapped in linen and a decorative cloth, then covered in a layer of plaster on which a picture of the entire body was painted. The researchers studied the two mummies – as well as a third, similar one – using the CT scanner. They discovered that at least one of them…

In 1911, the Norwegian explorer became the first person to reach the South Pole. Amundsen had originally planned on being the first person to reach the North Pole but in 1909, just as he was about to depart, he was beaten to it by the American Robert Peary.
