12 SEPTEMBER 1977 STEVE BIKO DIES The former leader of the South African Students’ Organisation, Steve Biko (full name Bantu Stephen Biko), died on this day in Pretoria. He’d been arrested about three weeks before in Grahamstown (now Makhanda) and had been held in a police cell in Port Elizabeth, where he’d been maltreated and tortured. In September, he was transferred to a prison in Pretoria where he died. The apartheid government at the time first said his death was the result of a hunger strike (which is when prisoners protest by refusing to eat).
