Though Dr Danie van der Walt’s conviction was overturned by the constitutional court last month, the ruling wasn’t based on merit. Justice Mbuyisile Madlanga found the doctor’s right to a fair trial had been infringed upon. The magistrate was found to have compromised Van der Walt’s rights by conducting her own research for the trial without referring to the medical textbooks she’d used in her ruling, according to The Citizen.
