I’m surprised the author of the article on incontinence (YOU, 6 August) didn’t mention the TVT (tension-free vaginal tape) operation. 26 AUGUST 1883 / KRAKATOA ERUPTS Krakatoa is a volcano in Indonesia, situated on an island also called Krakatoa. It had the biggest eruption – or series of eruptions, to be precise – recorded in history and they happened in 1883. The first eruption occurred at 1pm on 26 August 1883. By 2pm, a black cloud reached 27km into the sky above Krakatoa. The biggest eruption happened the next day, at around 10am. Some of these explosions were loud enough to be heard in Australia, about 3 500km away, and shot up to 80km into the air. By the third day, the eruption had subsided. Doctors aren’t sure exactly how Levin contracted the coronavirus. His paediatrician, Dr HP van der Merwe, says some studies indicate that the virus can be transmitted to babies in the womb but it’s very rare. Medical staff at the hospital were concerned about Levin as premature babies are prone to many complications, and there was also no certainty about how Covid-19 would affect him. But it appears that Levin suffered no adverse effects and developed as any other premature baby would, without obvious symptoms of the virus. Routine examinations of his brain, eyes and lungs all proved normal, Dr Van der Merwe says, and he’s active and healthy. A new satellite that takes high-resolution pictures revealed patches of penguin guano on the ice, indicating the presence of colonies. YEARS ago I saw a movie by the Slovak-Hungarian director Péter Kerekes called Cooking History. It was about army cooks and it featured Branko Trbovic, who was the personal cook of Josip Broz Tito, the absolute ruler of Yugoslavia. He was the first dictator’s chef I’d ever encountered. A lightbulb went on in my head. I started wondering what the people who cooked at key moments in history might have to say.
