Energy drinks tend to be marketed at young people but they’re definitely not suitable for teens. Studies have shown energy drinks trigger changes in the adolescent brain and the risk of complications is far greater because of their developing bodies. “For certain groups, it could be potentially dangerous,” Higgins says. “Like for those under 18, pregnant women, people who have a caffeine sensitivity, people who don’t consume caffeine on a regular basis and people who are taking certain medications, such as Adderall [Concerta] for attention deficit disorder.” It’s also risky to mix energy drinks with alcohol. RESEARCHERS are excited about the discovery of a new species of pygmy seahorse off the east coast of SA. The African or Sodwana Bay pygmy seahorse was found near the coast of Sodwana Bay, Kwa-Zulu-Natal, and is about the size of a grain of rice! Sodwana Bay, near the Mozambique border, is a popular scuba-diving area. Savannah Nalu Olivier, a scuba-diving instructor, first spotted the little guy in 2017 among bits of algae on the ocean floor. She’s handled the Covid crisis there in such a manner that the island is virtually back to normal. BRAZIL'S RAINFORESTS The results from two new scientific studies have raised concerns about the speed at which the Brazilian rain forests are declining due to deforestation (when forests are chopped down or burnt down to clear space for something else). The process seems to have sped up since President Jair Bolsonaro took office in January 2019. The first study shows the country lost about 12 000km² of forest last year.
