ARCHAEOLOGISTS in Norway recently discovered an ancient mountain pass and artefacts dating back to the time of the Vikings. The pass was uncovered because ice that used to cover it had melted – probably because of global warming. The researchers estimate the artefacts – which include knitted gloves, leather shoes and arrows complete with fletching (feathers) – are more than 1 000 years old. Researchers think they come from the Viking era, around 1 000 AD, when there was a lot of trade in the area. The objects have been well preserved, probably because they were encased in ice for so long and not exposed to wind, rain of sun.
