HOW can we help? What can we do? Where do we go to make a difference? Over and over again we’ve heard ordinary South Africans asking these questions as the devastating effect of Covid-19 is felt in every corner of our beautiful country. My father was a Coldstream Guard outside Buckingham Palace who went on to fight on royal navy ships in World War 2. He then met and married my mom in Cape Town. South Africa is located on a fairly stable part of the planet’s crust. But this doesn’t mean we’ve never had earthquakes. Mining activities in especially Gauteng and the northern Free State often cause earthquakes – the collapse of underground tunnels and shafts are the most common cause. The biggest earthquake ever recorded in SA was called the Tulbagh quake. It happened on 29 September 1969 and affected the towns of Tulbagh, Wolseley and Ceres in the Western Cape. The earthquake caused rockslides and fires and claimed the lives of 12 people. Buildings were reduced to rubble. It had a magnitude of about 6,3 and is thought to have been caused by the so-called Worcester Fault in the planet’s crust.…

JAPANESE authorities have cut thousands of rosebuds to keep people from spreading corona-virus. It’s spring in the northern hemisphere and normally thousands of people visit public flower gardens for festivals. Though the annual rose festival in the city of Saitama had been cancelled, its park was still open to visitors and authorities feared people would visit in droves to see the flowers. In another city, Sakura, more than 100 000 tulips were also cut after people ignored the government’s request for social distancing. 10 MAY 1994 Nelson Mandela inaugurated as president of SA When Nelson Mandela was inaugurated in 1994 he become South Africa’s first black president. The election – which took place two weeks previously – was SA’s first democratic election because everyone older than 18 was able to vote regardless of their skin colour. The term growth mindset was coined 30 years ago by Carol Dweck, a professor of psychology at Stanford University in the US, after she became interested in students’ attitudes about failure.
