IT WAS a moment of huge pride, a sight to bring a lump to the throat: 45 South African athletes entering the glare of the stadium at the opening of the 2016 Paralympic Games in Rio, each with a tale to tell of courage, persistence and determination against huge odds.
The squad, which represents 10 sporting codes – archery, athletics, canoeing, cycling, equestrian, power-lifting, rowing, swimming, shooting and wheelchair tennis – will be looking to exceed the 29-medal haul of London 2012: eight gold, 12 silver and nine bronze.
