There are records of people who are fairly immune to pain because of a mutation of the FAAH gene, but Jo’s situation is even more extreme because she has two genes that are different. Newcastle in northern KwaZulu-Natal hasn’t been hit by loadshedding, thanks to a little device called a geyser switch which controls when geysers are switched on and off. The municipality in the town of 55 000 people is a licensed distributor of electricity and as such is entitled to introduce its own measures to prevent blackouts for residents. When the rest of SA has loadshedding, the town reduces its electricity use by switching off geysers during peak times. Every home in the town has a geyser switch installed. “Our electrical management system allows the electrical department to effectively administer no loadshedding,” Newcastle municipal spokesperson Dumisani Thabethe says. More than 50 million tons: that’s the staggering weight of the world’s electronic waste each year, which is equivalent to 12 500 jumbo jets or 4 500 Eiffel Towers.
