I’VE always been interested in words and language. I started to study linguistics years ago but then decided philosophy was much more fun and stopped learning about the scientific study of language. But I’ve never stopped loving how the basic building blocks of communication work and I’m fascinated when I come across a word I didn’t know or when a familiar word is used in an unfamiliar way. It thrills me to read a sentence that gives me goosebumps or to experience one that makes me laugh out loud. And when I read a particularly moving paragraph, I love to share it with those who feel the same way. It’s one of the reasons I have a soft spot for our word search magazines. NO REWARD EXPECTED! I’D LIKE to share a few things that happened this week. With load-shedding, horrendous traffic and people being impatient on the roads, what happened to me on Monday made me smile and realise there are still good people around. Firstly, as I was driving to work there was an old German shepherd dog loose on the road. I pulled over to help, and so did another lady who parked right next to the dog, in the middle of the road, stopping traffic. She opened her back door and the dog jumped in. The birthmark is caused by an abnormal formation of tiny blood vessels in the skin and affects three in every 1 000 babies born worldwide. Since the ’80s, police around the globe have been using the automated fingerprint identification system (Afis) to compare fingerprints with millions of fingerprint records worldwide quickly and efficiently.
