Safe Working Hours is a campaign that unites medical students, junior doctors, unions and concerned members of the public across South Africa. The group is calling on health minister Dr Aaron Motsoaledi to investigate the working hours of junior doctors, who often work 30-hour shifts. The recent death of a 25-year-old intern at Paarl Hospital in the Western Cape was blamed on fatigue – Ilne Markwat crashed her car into a barrier while driving home after a gruelling shift. WHERE DID IT ALL BEGIN? The father of the Paralympics was German-born Briton Ludwig Guttmann (1899-1980). He was a neurologist – a medical specialist dealing with disorders of the nervous system, including the brain.
